Buttermilk Onion Rings

July 12, 2016

These onion rings are so good you just won't believe it until you try them.  Just imagine the best tasting onion rings that you have ever had and jump it up 3 steps and that is what you will get with these onion rings.  They are so tasty but beware.  Buttermilk onion rings are addictive too!

This is a great side dish for burgers, fried fish, steaks or just as a snack.  I like serving them as an appetizer.  So yummy!

I suggest dipping them in ketchup or barbecue sauce.  Of course you can always whip up a great zippy sauce with buttermilk dressing with hot sauce added.  No matter how you eat them they are delicious.

Ingredients (4 servings)

  • 2 large sweet onions
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • canola oil
  • kosher salt

Directions

Cut the onion into 1/2 in slices.  Separate slices into individual rings and place in a bowl.  Add 1 tbsp of flour to coat the onions and set aside. (Photo A)

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off. (Photo E) Coat each battered onion ring with breadcrumbs and place on a platter. (Photo F and G)

Pour the canola oil at least 2 inches deep in a large pan. Heat the oil to 325-350 degrees. Place the onion rings in the hot oil and fry until golden brown. (Photo H) Only fry a few onion rings at one time. Too many will reduce the temperature of the oil.

Place the crispy only rings on a paper towel lined baking sheet. (Photo J) Sprinkle with salt. Serve immediately or place in a 250 degree oven to keep warm.
